Waltham has a significant role in United States history as it was home to The Boston Manufacturing Company. This was the prototype during the 19th century for city planning and later became known as the Waltham-Lowell system of labor and production. Waltham is also called “Watch City” because the Waltham Watch Factory opened up there in the mid 1800’s and was the first to use an assembly line in their production of goods.
Today, Waltham is a very popular area for many businesses lined along the 128 corridor. For its residents, the prime location on Routes 128 and the Massachusetts Turnpike has made for the perfect location for those who regularly commute. The area is also home to a few higher level education institutions including Brandeis University and Bentley University.
